Luxury of picking your own laws to obey

Every person in our society understands that there are laws in place determine what we can and cannot do. Altho there are some laws in place that really don’t protect anyone and are a relic of a more religious and more conservative time, most laws we have ensure the day to day operation of the nation runs smoothly. We are all brought up being taught what is and is not acceptible, and we have an understanding that if you break the law you will face consequences.

Why is it then that people whom were not born here, and came to this country on their own will, for what I can only presume would be a better life decide for themselves what laws they wish to obey. They always pull the “Religious beliefs” bullshit to justify walking all over laws that we all have had to obay and still do. If these people have such a big issue with these laws then perhaps this is not the best place for them to reside. Sikhs are given exemption to helmet and hard hat laws and regulations because their turban cannot accommodate such protective gear. But what happens when that person is injured because he was not wearing a helmet? Inevitably he ends up in our publicly funded health care system receiving treatment for an injury that could have been avoided. How are we not “Violating human rights” by giving exemption for one working because he is sikh but forcing another worker to wear a helmet when he has a large afro that he has had since he was married. This is obviously an extreme example but given to prove a point.

Most recently i read in the news paper a 20 year old male who was arrested as part of an alleged home grown terrorist cell known as the Toronto 18. At the time of his arrest he was 18 so protected under YCJA, he is refusing to recognized the court as any form of authority as per his religious belifs. I find it disgusting that this person has the audacity to come to Canada and accuse our legal system as not being an authority of the law. He has no right claim that he is a victim of religious persecution. And he should be held accountable for his actions if he is indeed guilty of his alleged offences.

The more we bend the rules to accommodate individuals beliefs based on religious differences we set a precedence that we will accommodate anyone, because if we did not we would be violating that persons rights as a human being. But you can rest assured that same person we bent the rules for to preserve his human rights, is probably going to go home and treat his wife like a pile of shit.

I have said this in a prior blog and I shall say it again. At that point do we start infringing on our own human rights by attempting preserve another persons based on his religious beliefs. You cant have a double standard and expect people to just stand by and ignore it. I highly doubt if westerners began immigrating to the more Muslim nations in the middle east that they would not change for us. That woman would be treated as equal to men, and freedom of exspretion and individuality is tolerated and embraced. If you come to another country you should be with the understanding that things are different for a reason, and if you don’t like it then maybe this is not the place to come.

A town in a city.

The other day at work I was walking around and I came to a realization. I may work in the middle of the largest city in Canada, but where I work is just like its own town. When I got right down to thinking about the details of my new discovery I realized that you could live at the Manulife Centre and never ever step outside.

Realistically who would want to lead such a miserable existence, but the fact still remains such an existence could quite easily be maintained. Think about this now, you have an apartment tower with 800 units bellow that you have a full mall containing everything anyone might need to survive. It is exactly like a town. You have your market which in our case is the Valu-Mart, you have your pharmacy, post office, shoe repair, tailor, dry cleaner, 3 full restaurants a full gym a bank, several clothing outlets, a doctors office and optometrist and of course theirs us. Security or the town Police force, but the list goes on and on.

Manulife Centre is a very proper place, an establishment that prides itself on being snobby and better then everyone else. But because you have people who live there you end up with situations like the one I saw the other morning. A resident walk across the mall to the other end to get to the bank in a tank top and flip flops. But what can you do? This is his home is it not?

And just like a town everyone knows everyone. And there is always gossip, it is really neat to watch the complex function day to day as a somewhat 3rd party. There may be close to 1000 tenants, and who knows how many staff but everyone greats everyone.

From the time I started employment at this site I vowed to be out with in a few months. But here I am a full year later and my attitude has change greatly. I don’t view this as a burden I view it now as a opportunity to help keep this bustling community running.

So even when you walk outside and look around at the thousands of people during rush hour and the many tall towers surrounding you. You can step back and appreciate the little patch small town in the middle of a massive cosmopolitan.

I'm sorry what?

When I first becoming annoyed with see more people then me around me not speaking English or French I kept it very much to myself. After all this is Canada and this is Toronto “the most diverse city in the world”. But the more I talk to close friends about this issue I realize I'm not the only one who shares my thoughts.

I’m not a racist person at all. I myself would not be here today if it were not for immigration. But here is my thing, it seems more and more it is becoming ok not to learn the one or both of the official languages of this country. You get on a bus and a passenger is screaming at the top of their lungs cause they want to get off but cant read “Step on step to open doors” You get into a cab and the guy doesn’t even know major steet names and his yapping on his cell looking at you in the mirror giving you the feeling he is talking about you.

When I had a friend visit from Vancouver island I thought it would be cool to check out china town and little India. What we found was a little upsetting, shop keepers with no English, stores with only Arabic signs or Cantonese . How is this fair to the rest of the people in this city? Should be not have a right to know what stores are on our public streets?

In far to many cases EMS Fire and police have to struggle with emergencies involving people who know very little to no English or French. Immagrating to this country you have to know at least one of 0ur official dialects. (unless your sponsored in which case the points shift around and u can sneak by)

However as a refugee claimant, due to the nature of the matter you will almost always get in. Once in if you move to a city like Toronto, Markham, Vancouver you will almost certintly find a community of your own kind . and at that point why bother learning? The Government has already insured your health care is fully covered and your on the list of affordable housing. Which may I add as a final point takes priority over all ther applicants for affordable housing.

The government had ESL programs in place and intergration programs. But it is voulentery so few take advantage of it. I believe it should be a requirement, It is nessecery to inure public safty and for the future success of new arrivals. Instead of them surving off government handouts.

There are allot of people who will think I'm a horrible person for this, but as we stand now things are getting out of control.
